About Everloom

In August 2020, I lost my grandmother who I called Mimi. Due to the risks associated with COVID-19 our family wasn’t able to gather and celebrate her life in person. Like so many other families who lost loved ones during the pandemic we held a virtual service with the hope that we’d be able to come together sometime soon.

After the service, our family took turns sharing some of their favorite photos of Mimi. With each new picture came a new story, but also a request for the owner to send the image to the other family members. I was surprised to find out that there were many pictures of Mimi that even her own children didn’t know existed. For someone of her age it was common to have only a single copy of a photo and with four children that meant that only one one of her children could have access to any single picture. It also meant that her grandchildren and great grandchildren had never seen so many photos from important moments in her life. With each new image I felt like I was getting to know a new part of her.

It became clear that the family needed a way to centralize all of the images of Mimi so everyone could access them. While there were plenty of options for sharing photos and videos, there wasn’t a way to add the stories behind them or to more generally tell the story of her life and share our memories of her.

More than anything, we needed a way to make sure her story, media, and memories wouldn’t be lost in a flood or fire. We needed something that would live on for future generations without the burden of a monthly or annual fee that digital storage companies typically charge. We needed something that would be easy to use for all generations. We needed it to be accessible, but also private. I searched for a solution but what we needed didn’t exist. Our need as a family led to the creation of Everloom.

George Eliot wrote, “Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them.” Everloom brings together family history, ancestry, and media and keeps it safe for future generations so that no one is forgotten.

We hope Everloom brings your family together. Whether it be to remember those who have passed or to preserve the memories of the living for generations to come.
