Getting Started Writing

Knowing where to begin can be tough. That's why we built Chapter Guides with built in Tips, but we understand you may still need some inspiration to get started. We've outlined a few approaches below to help you begin creating your Everloom.

Start with an Outline

Finding the right words can take time but making a list of what to include is easy. Instead of typing out full sentences consider using bullet points to create an outline of the details you want to include in a chapter.

For example, in a Chapter about Marriage start with a list of the details you'd want to include about your wedding such as the date of your wedding, who was in attendance, who was part of your wedding, and where your wedding was.

Once you have a list of the key details you can return to each point and focus on writing more about them one at a time.

Question and Answer Approach

Our Chapter Tips are written as questions to not only spark inspiration but to also help provide an alternate approach for your Chapter.
Instead of writing longer form Chapters you could copy and paste our Chapter Tips (our your own questions) into your Chapter and write your answers. This can help alleviate the challenge of coming up with transitions between topics within a Chapter.

Speak then Write

Speaking generally comes more naturally to people than writing, so consider pretending that someone is interviewing you and just start talking about a topic aloud. As you speak, jot down some notes about what you're saying then return to those notes later to provide more detail. This will also help ensure that you use language that is more natural to you.

Don't be Afraid to be Yourself

Remember that the people who read your Everloom will be doing so to get to know you, so it's better to write something in your own voice than to try and write like a poet or novelist. If you find yourself describing something as "radiant" and you've never used that word before in your life go back and replace it with a word you would use. Just be you. It's easier.
